Preparation of Body & Mind
Cleanse the hands. The ancients washed hands and rinsed the mouth before consulting the oracle. In modern practice: wash your hands deliberately, as an act of transition — from the ordinary world into the act of enquiry.
Still the breath. Sit quietly for two to three minutes. Breathe slowly and evenly until the mind settles and the inner noise quiets. The oracle speaks in stillness, not in haste.
Formulate your question with precision. Hold the question clearly in mind — one matter only. The ancients phrased it as: "Regarding the matter of [X] — what is the way forward?" Vague questions yield vague counsel.
Cultivate sincerity, not supplication. Zhu Xi wrote that preparation is not prayer to a deity — it is entering the focused state of a scholar before an examination, so that the full intelligence of your attention is brought to bear.
The Classical Prohibitions
Do not cast without sincerity. Consulting the oracle in jest, or while harbouring doubt about its validity, invalidates the enquiry.
Do not cast without a real question. The oracle is not a game. It requires genuine uncertainty and genuine need.
Do not cast when the decision is already made. If you have already determined your course, the oracle cannot serve you — it speaks to open questions, not to ratify closed ones.
Do not cast while ill or severely depleted. The quality of concentrated attention required is unavailable when the body is in acute distress.
Do not ask the same question twice. The oracle has spoken. Return only if circumstances have genuinely changed.
